My Life

A Picture Tells how many words?

It was one of those perfect English autumnal days which occur more frequently in memory than in life. – PD James

I Don’t know where this came from exactly, but I’ve been really thinking about this a lot lately. Why is it that when you see a picture of a place or think about what it will be like, the actual place rarely matches the image yo uhad in your mind?

We humans like to romanticize, I suppose. A picture of a hazy mountain scene taken early in the morning doesn’t actually look that way when you’re there. First, the camera blocks out the fact that there are things going on to the left or right that you may not see. Also, who knows what Photoshop wonders have been performed.

The only place that ever lived up to my ideals have been my trips to Europe. It always surprises me with new and wonderful memories everytime I have been there.

That’s it for now.

Inspiration vs. Perspiration

We should be taught not to wait for inspiration to start a thing. Action always generates inspiration. Inspiration seldom generates action.
  – Frank Tibolt

I always seem to start off by saying, Oh, so true.  Well it is.  This may not be so profound, but certainly is worth thinking about.  How many times have you thought about getting to the gym?  Or thought about quitting smoking? Or thought about how you were going to start that project around the house?

When you begin, you actually start wanting to do more and ideas come to you that never would have considered had you merely sat and thought about it.  I’m going to try and take this one to heart, but I’ll only be able to do so by beginning all those things that I want to do.

This way or that?

The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.
  – Terry Pratchett

Why is it that I can almost always argue both sides?  This quote reminded me of how often my opinion is swayed.  It makes me angry that I often don’t have an opinion at all, or sometimes I have a very strong opinion, but I can see the other side as well and that keeps me from arguing my side blindly.

Often times I’ll change my views if someone else presents a good argument that I have not thought of before.  I have never know anyone else to do so.  Does this make me wishy washy and floundering, or does it make me intelligent enough to not hold on to old notions upon receiving new and more enlightened information?

What do you think?

Life is…

Drama is life with the dull bits cut out.
  – Alfred Hitchcock

Oh, so true.  That is why they have to cut so much out of “reality” television before they air the shows.  If everything they filmed was in it, the shows would last for 3 seasons and be so boring that nobody would watch.

“Never tell anyone that you’re: writing a book, going on a diet, exercising, taking a course, or quitting smoking. They’ll encourage you to death.”
  – Lynn Johnston

Oh, so true.  Actually the encouragement part is really nice, but something about telling other people takes it away from you and gives everyone a share.  I would rather keep these things to myself until such time as I know I’ve succeeded for good and then let them in on it.

About author

I'm just a guy trying to get through this crazy thing called life. I set this site up to store quotes that I've heard, read or made up on my own. Some are from famous people and some are just things that me or someone in my presence said that rang out as "Quot-a-ble".
